Third Generation Computers

The technological advancement responsible for emerging the third generation computters were Integrated Circuit(I.C.).An IC is an electronic circuit with a large number of components built on a small silicon chip.Semi conductor memories (RAMs and ROMs) also made this generation computers distinct from previous two generations.
Small Scale Integrated Circuits(SSI) and Medium Scale Integrated Circuits(MSI) could replace transistors and the semi conductor memory replaced the magnetic core memory elements as primary storage medium. The magnetic disk was able to replace magnetic tape as secondary storage medium.
Because of the SSIs(i.e.hundreds of transistors  and other circuit components are integrated into a single chip) and MSIs(i.e thousands of transistors and other circuit components are integrated into a single chip)The third generation computers were smaller and reliable than second generation computers. They had high memory capacity. The development of mini computers  could be possible during  this period. The concept of multiprocessing, multi user system were also introduced.
Example of Third Generation Computers are as follows
IBM 360 series and IBM 370 series,PDP-8 series and PDP-11.ge 600 seriesetc
