History of Computer in Nepal

Although the first electronic digital computer was built in the mid of 1940's.Computer was introduced in Nepal in the year  1972 only.It was introduced by His Majesty's Government for the census of 1972(2028B.S.).This was the second generation computer of IBM company called IBM 1401.His Majesty's Government  had paid Rs one lakh twenty five thousand per  month as a rent for this computer.
Census Department at Thapathali Kathmandu had used IBM 1401 computer for the first time to process 1 crore 12.5 lakhs population census taking 1 year, 1 month and 15 days.After the completion of this work, discussion had taken place whether to send it back or use and continue it for the continuous processing and proper use of the computer in Bureau of Statistics.
Later, it became essential to operate the computer for day and night,for this reason a separate branch called Yantrikee Sarinikaran Kendra(Electronic Data Processing Center) was established in 1975(2031B.S.) which after six years was converted to National Computer Center(NCC).
For the census of B.S.2038 a British computer ICL 2950/10 (International Computer Limited 2900 Series) was added from the aid of UNDP and UNFPA at two million American dollar from the British ICL company,which had 64terminals. By the help of this  fourth generation computer the 2038 census was completed  within one year and 3 months.
  Micro computer such as Apple,Vector and Sirus were introduced in Kathmandu for the first time in B.S.2039(1983).Now companies such as Computer Consultancy (CC),Managment Information Processing System(MIPS),and Data System International (DSI) were established and today there are more than 100 branded types of micro computers are imported and used more than 20 group of companies are working for assembling computer and many other new companies started their sales and distribution along with training, maintenance and upgrading etc.
