There are more than two thousand different virus which may infect our computer system but depending on their nature the virus are classified into four categories.
(i) Message carrying virus
(ii) Start up Infectors
(iii) System Infectors
(iv) General Purpose Application Infectors
(i) Message carrying virus :
Virus which does not infect the computer system but just show some message on the screen are known as message carrying virus. These virus do not alter the programs or data. The message displayed on the screen may be a textual information or graphics (pictures) or both, sometimes these message entertain the user.
(ii) Start - up infectors :
Virus which alter the data or the application software available on the computer as soon as we start the computer system are known as start-up infectors. Hence one should be aware of these virus. These virus reside on the boot sector of your disk.
(iii)System infectors :
The system infectors infect and destroy or corrupt the system files concerned with the operating system of the computer. Once the computer is infected with these virus the system files fail to perform their function and your computer may not be booted.
(iv) General purpose application infectors :
The virus which infects and damages the application software like Word Processor (e.g. Word Perfect, MS WORD) or data base package (e.g dBASE III +, Foxpro) or Spreed sheet (e.g. LOTUS -123, MS-EXCEL) are known as general purpose application infectors.
Example of Computer Virus :
The number of virus is increasing day by day. The virus are introduced in the market and spread in a cumulative fashion. The Anti virus (i.e. program to remove the virus) are developed for these virus. The anti virus checks these virus and remove them. In the mean time, new virus are introduced again and spread in the market (may be throughout the world). Hence, there is a continuous introduction of the virus and in turn the anti virus are being developed.
