A Line Printer prints one line of the text at a time. The line printer is used to print a large number of pages. It is mostly used with mainframe and mini computers. It can print 300 to 3000 lines per minute.
The line printer may be :
1. Impact type line printer
2. Non impact type line printer
Impact type line printer :
Generally, impact printer use electromechanical mechanism that causes hammers to strike against a ribbon and paper to print the text.
The impact type line printer are :
1. Drum printer
2. Chain printer
3. Band printer
1.Drum printer : The drum printer uses a rotating drum or cylinder. The drum has a complete raised character set in each band around the drum. There are as many circular bands as there are printing positions.
The drum rotates one complete revolution of the drum is required to print each line. There is magnetically driven hammer in each character position of the line. The drum printer receives all characters to be printed in one line of the text from the processor the hammers hit the paper and ribbon against the desired character on the drum. Thus, at the end of the rotations, all necessary characters on the paper are printed. The paper then moves to the next line.The drum printer can print from 200 to 2000 lines per minute
2. Chain Printer : Chain printer uses a chain that rotates horizontally in front of paper. The rotating chain is called print chain because it contains the characters to be printed.
As in a drum printer, hammers are there in each print position. The printer receives all the characters to be printed in a single line from the processor and as being the line printer it prints single line at time. Printing is performed when the required character comes in the print position, immediately the hammer strikes the ribbon and paper against the character.
The speed of the chain printer varies from 400 to 2400 lines / minute.
3. Band Printer : Band printers are similar to chain printers. A band printer does not use a chain but it uses a fast rotating scalloped steel print band. As in a drum printer the print band contains raised characters. The hammers strike the ribbon and paper against the character to print it.
The speed of band printer is about 3000 lines / minute.
Non impact type printers :
Generally, the non impact printer does not have electromechanical printing head to strike against the ribbon and the paper. The method used for printing is either thermal ( heating ) or electrostatic etc.
Let's consider an example of thermal type line printer. Such a printer contains heating elements for each dot position on the print line. The entire line of dots is printed at a time by the non impact line printer. The character is printed by moving the paper through the printer one-dot- a line at a time.
The speed of the non impact line printer is about 400 lines / minute.
