Coding

An unique number given to persons or things is known as code number. Code numbers can be used as a means for identifying persons or thins. Thus, providing the unique numbers to different persons or things is known as coding. In the data processing, coding will provide identification of items, reduces computer storage space, gives fast access to stored data and easy for comparison and analysis. The formation of codes (or coding ) can be done with different arrangements of digits and characters. While coding, it should be remembered that the same code number must not be assigned to different terms and the same item must not have two different code numbers

Coding System
While assigning codes one can use :
1. Block codes : a block of consecutive numbers is allocated to a general class or group of item.
Example 1
If we want to provide the codes for the schools of Eastern Region of Nepal we can give code numbers 1-10,0009First block) and schools of the Central Region can be given numbers 10,001-20,000(Second Block0 and so on.
2. Interpretive Codes : These code numbers can be interpreted from the values of their numerals or letters so as to provide description of the items.
3. Mnemonic Codes : Codes are formed by incorporating character selected from the item's description.
Example
District                                                    District Mnemonic code
 Kathmandu                                             K.T.M.
Bhaktapur                                                B.K.T.
Thus, the mnemonic code K.T.M. represents district Kathmandu.
