The software that is written by the user to solve a specific problem using the computer is known as an application software. Application software is a set of programs necessary to carry out operation for a specific application. In Nepal a number of software development companies or software houses are established to provide the user with application software that satisfies the need of the users. The application software may be used for official purpose of the government, engineering designs, teaching aids and so on.
The example of some application package and their use are given below :
Word processing package :
To process and manipulate text. e.g. Word star, Word Perfect, Word pro, MS-WORD etc.
Spreadsheet packages : To calculate fineness data analysis and few graphics
e.g. LOTUS 1-2-3, MS-EXCEL etc.
Database packages : To manipulate records, merge and data and files record and retrieve desired information.
e.g. d BASE, Fox pro, Fox base Oracle, Unify, Sybase, Informix etc.
Engineering design packages : For design or drafting the engineering jobs e.g. CAD / CAM
