On the Basis of Volume

On the basis of volume, computers are classified into 3 types. They are
1. Mainframe computers
2. Mini computers
3 Micro computers

1 Mainframe computers:
A Mainframe is the largest, fastest and perhaps one of the most expensive computer systems of general use. They have very large storage capacity and have a very high processing speed. They support large number of terminals, so 100 persons can work at same time with one mainframe.Their applications mainly include processing of huge amount of different kinds of data in large private, public enterprises and government. They are used in government organizations, bank, airline, reservations and so on.In Nepal, the population census of 2028 B.S. AND 2038 B.S. had been done with the American Mainframe computer named IBM-1401 model and British Mainframe computer ICL 2950/10 respectively. The Mainframe computer system occupies 1000 square ft. consists of central processing unit(CPU), 4 to 8 tape units,Card Reader, 4 to 6 Hard disk units.Uninterrupted Power Supply(UPS).Visual Display Unit(VDU),Line printers,Modems,Terminals, etc. The memory (RAM) of Mainframe computer lies in the range 64 to 256 Mbytes. The hard disk  used 1000 MB- 10 GB or more.Their processing speed is 30-100 MIPS.About 100 to 200 people can work together at the same time with a single Mainframe.Mainframe computers can be used in LAN (Local Area Network),MAN(Metropolitan Area Network),and WAN(Wide Area Network) systems. With the help of Main frame communication can be established among the computers kept at hundreds of Kilometers via satellite.
Example of Main frame computers are:
IBM 1401, HP 9000 model 3705/300
IBM 4300 Series HP 9000 model 8705/400   .
