Volume Label

The name given to a diskette or to a hard disk is referred to as volume label. You can give name to your diskette or hard disk as you like. It can have a maximum of 11 characters.
Examples :  CLASSIX
                  COMPUTERI
                  BIPANA

Disk Drives :
When you are working with the computer, all of your data is temporarily stored in the working memory of the computer. called RAM. Since RAM is volatile, your data will be lost in case of power failure or switch off. Another drawback of RAM is that its memory capacity is limited, but you need enough space which could store a lot of data to be recalled when required. The medium on which mass data is stored are called disks. To store data on such disk, we need some device. Hence, those devices through which we store data on disks are called disk drives. Disk drives are of two types. They are :
1.Floppy Drives
2. Hard Disk Drives

Floppy Disk  5.25 inch

Floppy disk 3.5  inch

 1. Floppy drives :
They drive the storage media, called a floppy diskette. The floppy diskette is made of flexible plastic material coated with magnetic oxide. The floppy disk drives are housed within the case.As shown in the figure, a 5.25 inch disk drive is used to drive 5.25 inch diskette and a 3.5 inch disk drive is used to drive a 3.5 inch diskette.
Generally, the 5.25 diskettes used with P.C. - X.T. store a maximum of 360 K.Bytes, it is called D.S.D.D. (Double Sided Double Density) diskette.
The computers, P.C.-X.T. and other mentioned above use high density diskettes called D.S.H.D.(Double Sided High Density), which can store 1.2 M.bytes of data.
Another type of floppy diskettes commonly used these days are 3.5 inch diskettes. These diskettes are contained in plastic protective case protected by a sliding metal door. They can store data either 720 K.bytes (D.S.D.D.- Double Sided Double Density) or 1.44 M.bytes (D.S.H.D- Double Sided High Density) of data. These diskettes are commonly used with PC-386 and above systems.
The 3.5 inch diskettes are also used with small portable computers, called the LAPTOP computers. These days, you can get computers even smaller than LAPTOP computers, which are ideal computers to use while traveling, they are Notebook and Palmtop computers, they use disk drive of 2 inch size. The diskettes are used in such a computer can store 2.88 M.bytes of data.

2. Hard disk drive :
A hard disk drive is housed along with a hard disk (combination of disk) in a sealed unit to prevent damage from dust. The hard disk drive drives a hard disk. The hard disk can store a large amount of a data, much larger than the floppy diskette. The capacity of hard disk ranges from 10M.bytes to 1 G.bytes.
