Operating System (OS)
Concept
The people who used the early computers had to interact directly with the machine to get the work done. They were supposed to understand the hardware inside the computer. As time passed, computer systems became more and more complex having vast application areas. It was very difficult for the users to understand all the ins and outs of the inside hardware. So, people felt the need of a good computer-user interface which could help them to have a complete control or command over the computer's internal organization. As a result of continuous working of the experts in this field to satisfy the above mentioned need, the first operating system was developed in the year 1950.

What is an Operating System?
An operating system is an organized set or collection of software programs that control the overall operation of the computer system.
Basically, an operating system acts as a translator between the operator and the computer. An operating system acts as an interface between the user and computer hardware. You can consider that an operating system is a silent partner when you are using the computer. Without it, you can not perform any computer operations like running BASIC Programming, entering into  Word Perfect or doing d.BASE etc.
