Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Wide Area Network (W.A.N.) is such a network which spans a large geographical area such as the entire continent. The rate of transmission of data (data rate) is below 1 Mbps (Mega Bytes per Second). They are characterized by the fact that they are owned by different organizations. For the data communication among the computers, they employ microwave link or satellite communication channels.
So, it is possible to talk through your computer at your home to your pen pals studying in Australia, America or Japan if you have facility of WAN at your home.
