Any collection of interconnected, independent computers that are located within a small area (e.g. within a building ) is known as Local Area Network (L.A.N.).
Generally LAN is established within a distance of 1 km radius. LAN generally has three characteristics features :
1. Diameter not more than a few kilometers.
2. Data transfer rate is several Megabits per seconds.
3. Complete ownership of a single organization.
In LAN, there is a powerful central computer with large memory and high speed printer. In this system, each user has computers, called workstation which is connected with the central powerful computer called the Server (or File Server). As the computer is connected with a central computer, the user can use the central computer, its memory or other resources for complex computation, which can not be performed by the workstation. Now a days, everyone is interested in building a LAN.
