Introduction
Generally, the exchange of ideas, messages between two or more persons is referred as communication. Today, computers are used to send and receive ( or to exchange ) information, like telephone system. So, it has been possible to have communication between two persons or organizations using computers. For this purpose, computer at different distances are to be connected together by some means- forming a network. A computer network is a group of computers that are linked together so that they can communicate and share resources.
Imagine that there are 30 schools in your district which are located in different cities wide apart from each other, all the schools have their own computers. Suppose one of the schools, EAST-POLE HIGH SCHOOL is organizing an Essay Competition in near future. The head master or principal wants to send the notice to different schools and he needs the feed back from other school to fix the date. For rapid exchange of such information between the schools, a perfect communication medium is needed. What is to be done is - computers that are present in different schools are connected together in such a way that each one of these computer can work on its own and if need arises ( as mentioned above to exchange information regarding, an Essay Competition ), the head master of EAST-POLE HIGH SCHOOL may communicate with his computer with other computers of head masters of different schools through the communication link. The communication link may be through copper wires, microwave channels, or even satellite or any such medium.
Hence, a collection of independent computers connected through a communication medium is known as computer network. To make a network, each of the computer should be able to work independently on its own.
